Working from home

Today I had planned to work from home.

Until, during drinks with my boss last night, she revealed her utter dislike of the working from home phenomenon.

To understand her point of you, I should firstly help you create a visual image of my boss:

Age: 51
Divorced: twice
Affairs at work: three
Nationality: Swiss

Actually, this might be easier:

So, thankfully she hadn't noticed the huge "I'm working from home tomorrow" bag next to me at the bar when she went off on one about how she thought working from home was a complete farce.  She then moved on to comment about those who work compressed hours and how that isn't fair (she even turned to me at one point and said "you work 4 days a week, so you only get paid for 4 days: that's fair!" "Welllllll" I squirmed, "I actually do get paid five days... I work compressed hours".  We then had to go on to explain to her that in the UK we are contracted to work 35 hours a week and that it is possible to do that in four days.  I also subtly, well, not that subtly, pointed out that I did work last Friday and I also worked most of the weekend.

You'd think that it would be men who harbour these resentments, but be warned, it seems it's not a sexist feeling.

So, the point of the blog was... I didn't work from home.  I hauled myself out of bed and got stuck into another working day in the office.  Oh well, weekend tomorrow :-)
